Exploring the Monochromatic Visual Style in Creating Animation

Chapter 1: Introduction
1.1 Background Research
      Wu Jing Tong (2013) stated, the emergence of colour film animation has demonstrates the development and advent of digital technologies. This resulted in the monochromatic film animation gradually withdraw from mainstream field animation as the multi colour visual style is more attracts the audience.  However, the monochromatic film animation did not eliminate as there are still have artists and directors like to use monochromatic colour to express the art of animation (Wu JIng Tong, 2013).

1.2 Problem Statement
      Through observation researcher, Upin & Ipin (2007), BoBoiBoy (2011) and SeeFood (2012), film animations of Malaysia for instant are mostly presented in colour visual style. Thence, the researcher has seen the potential the film animation Malaysia represent in monochromatic visual style.

1.3 Research Question
      What is monochromatic visual style?
      How monochromatic visual style can influence viewers' mood through animation?

1.4 Research Objectives
      To study about monochromatic visual style.
      To produce an animation that can influence viewers' mood with monochromatic visual style.


Chapter 2: Literature Review
2.1 Monochromatic
      Monochromatic is a verb origin from Greek, monochrōmatos. Broken into Greek roots, mono means alone, single, sole, only, chromatic (khroma) means colour. Monochromatic is defined as having one colour and represented by different hues and tints.
      
2.1.1 Meaning Monochromatic Colour
      Steven Bradley mentioned that each of the colour has specific meaning and symbolism themselves. However, the meaning of it is assigned culturally by people. Even though is different in some time but people will necessarily affected by it.

2.1.2 Monochromatic Colour in Animation
      There are animations that is no fully presented in monochromatic colour, but in certain scene has present in monochromatic colour to show the mood of scene.

2.2 Animation
     Animation is the art in motion. Animation is the illusion in animators’ mind that created and visualizing by their hands. Animation is a medium that animators use to deliver their message.

2.2.1 Experimental Animation
      A free form of animation that to explore the unknown, search for some new elements and risk the unexpected to produce a experiment animation.

2.2.2 Cut-Out Animation
   Cut-out animation is producing animation by using flat characters, props and backgrounds that cut from materials such as paper, card board, stiff fabric or photos. 

      
Chapter 3: Methodology
      This research will conduct case study as research method. The researcher will study and observe the concept, style, techniques of 3 different artists and 3 film animations.

Storyboard of "Nightmare"

This story is about a little girl who is having a nightmare as she read a storybook before she fell asleep. In the nightmare, there is a teddy bear helping the little girl to run away from the monster and escape from her nightmare by passing through a tunnel.
The setting of visual style in real world would be coloured; in the nightmare would be monochromatic coloured.
